What’s the Hype About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Pets?

With all the developments in modern medicine, who would have guessed that the key to one of the most cutting-edge therapies is in the air? Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for pets is one of the latest ways that Heart of Texas Veterinary Specialty Center is bringing the best of veterinary medicine to our pet patients.

Oxygen Therapy

The medical field has recognized the benefits of oxygen for many centuries, but it has taken awhile for the uses of this ubiquitous gas to be recognized.

During a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, the patient is placed inside of a pressurized chamber containing pure oxygen. Room air is typically only around 21% oxygen. Treatment times vary greatly depending on the goal of treatment. In most cases, multiple sessions are needed to maximize effect.

Having a patient breathe in this oxygen-rich air has been shown to have many benefits including:

  • Reduction of swelling
  • Reduction of hypoxia (low oxygen levels)
  • Increased healing
  • Decreased infection
  • Lessening of pressure

Human medical doctors have been using this therapy for things like stroke, carbon monoxide poisoning, and decompression injuries. In recent years, though, we have begun to recognize the value of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for pets as well. While there are still many applications to be found, we are utilizing this treatment modality more and more in our practice.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Pets

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be a hugely beneficial therapy in adjunct to other treatments for many conditions that affect our pets. In fact, many of the patients we see in our internal medicine, surgery, and emergency departments can benefit from this therapy. Common uses for these treatments include pets with:

  • Postoperative swelling
  • Injuries and burns
  • Snakebites
  • Internal or head trauma
  • Disc disease
  • Non-healing wounds
  • Smoke inhalation injuries
  • Pancreatitis
  • Asphyxiation related injuries

As we continue to gain experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for pets, chances are good that we will find more and better applications for this therapy. With little worry about side effects, there are probably few conditions in veterinary medicine that can’t benefit from a little oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a valuable tool that has increased our ability to better treat many of the patients we are here to help at Heart of Texas. We are proud to be able to offer such cutting-edge therapy to our clients and better help many critically ill or injured pets.
